Wanted vehicle
Newland Police Department and Avery County Sheriff’s Office are looking for the following vehicle. The vehicle appears to be a red/grey late 1980s or early 1990s model Chevrolet pickup. The vehicle’s owner may be involved in or have knowledge of recent vehicle breaking and entering crimes in Newland.
Suspicious fire
Officers with Avery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a fire on Little Horse Creek Road early on Oct. 21. An old, unoccupied house and a storage building in a tree field on Little Horse Creek Road burned. Avery County Fire Marshal’s Office believes the fire was set intentionally. Two vehicles were seen leaving the area shortly after neighbors heard an explosion from the fire in the unoccupied house. The incident is still under investigation.
Home invasion and assault
Around 5:45 a.m. on Oct. 22, officers with Avery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on Sugar Mountain No. 1 Road about an assault. The male victim reported that two male suspects entered his home and demanded money. During a struggle with the suspects, the male victim received a stab wound in the lower abdomen. The suspects have not been identified at this time and this incident is still under investigation. The suspects were wearing solid black clothing and initially identified themselves as police officers as they entered the house.
“We know anyone who is brave enough to impersonate a police officer and use weapons is a serious threat to our communities, but without any identification by the victims of this crime, we need any and all help to get these dangerous people off the street.” Sheriff Kevin Frye stated.
