Ken and Monet Samuelson receive doctoral degrees

Ken and Monet Samuelson were hooded for doctoral degrees in educational leadership during the morning commencement ceremony at East Tennessee State University on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011.

This is the third graduate degree earned by the duo in six years. In addition to their doctorate degree, each hold a masters degree in school administration (Western Carolina University, 2007), as well as an educational specialist degree in school system leadership (East Tennessee State University, 2009). Dr. Virginia Foley served as the chair for each dissertation committee. Ken published a dissertation entitled “Interscholastic Sports, Academic Performance and Attendance of Middle School Student Athletes and Nonathletes.” Monet's published dissertation is “Student Outcomes and the Implementation of a Ninth Grade Academy in a Western North Carolina High School.” 

The couple met while earning their undergraduate degrees at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. Ken, from Metlakatla (a small island community off the southern coast of Alaska), graduated from Lee with a bachelors degree in special education. Monet, originally from Avery County, graduated from Lee with a degree in music education. 

The couple resides in Pineola and have two daughters: Bella, 4, and Callie, 18 months. Ken serves as a teacher of exceptional children at Avery Middle School. Monet is principal of Viking Academy and Challenge Academy at Avery High School. Dr. and Dr. Samuelson hope to work in public school administration for several years and possibly teach at the college level at some point in the future.
