Shipley receives Eagle Scout badge
Naval Officer, Ensign Blaine Shipley of Banner Elk, and member of Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church, received his Eagle Scout badge, and pins for his parents, Joel and Collen Shipley, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012.
Shipley’s grandmothers are June Krupcale of Johnson City, Tenn. and Mary Ruth Cruise of Smithville, Texas. Shipley graduated from N.C. State in 2010 with a degree in civil engineering, while also completing courses in Naval ROTC. He has been serving America in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. COWPENS in Yokosuka, Japan for the past year.
Shipley was home on a very short leave and finally had a little time to have his Eagle ceremony on Jan. 31, before returning to Tokyo Bay on Thursday, Feb. 2. He completed his Eagle Scout Project (Worship Point at Holston Presbytery Camp) in 2004. Shipley told the current scout members and parents of Banner Elk Troop 807 that he felt his dedication and hard work to become an Eagle Scout, combined with his education, significantly aided in his entering the military as a commissioned officer. Members of the community and Scout Troop 807 including leaders Dr. Steven Cook, Garrick Smith, Carl Griewisch, Stan Ferguson, Brian Raymond, Pastor Lonnie Barnes and John Perry, were all happy to congratulate Shipley and to be a part of his Eagle Scout ceremony.
