A word from ACS Superintendent Burleson – Summer school begins, 2013-14 school calendar released

Avery County Schools summer school program began on June 17 with more than 400 students and staff. We are committed to providing excellent instruction to help students enrolled get a little “jump start” on next year.
In addition to summer school instruction for students, summer provides time to get prepare for next year. Please be aware of the following dates for our upcoming school year.
The 2013-2014 school calendar:
• June 17: First day of summer school
• Aug. 7 to 10: New teacher orientation, Central Services Conference Room
• Aug.13: Optional teacher workday
• Aug. 14: Optional teacher workday
• Aug. 15: Mandatory teacher workday and convocation, Avery High School
• Aug. 16: Mandatory workday
• Aug. 16: Freshman orientation, Avery High School (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; bus transportation provided)
• Aug. 19: First student day
• Sept. 1: Labor Day holiday
• Nov. 11: Veteran's Day holiday

• Nov. 12: Required workday, Parent Conference Day
• Nov. 27 to 29: Thanksgiving Holiday
• Dec. 23 to Jan. 1, 2014: Christmas vacation
• Jan. 20, 2014: Holiday, Martin Luther King birthday
• Feb. 21, 2014: Vacation day (no school)
• March 28, 2014: Teacher workday (no school for students)
• April 18 to 23, 2014: Easter holiday
• May 26, 2014: Memorial Day holiday
• June 5, 2014: Anticipated last student day
