ACS Christmas concert series

Avery County High School band and chorus, Avery Middle School band and chorus and Cranberry Middle School band will perform their annual Christmas concerts in the coming weeks. ACHS band will perform first, at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, at the ACHS gym. The AMS band will follow the next day at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, and CMS will wrap up the concert series at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11. 


Playing the first concert at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, the ACHS band will play “Santa of Seville,” “Of Festive Bells” and “Ancient Kings,” “Carol of the Bells,” “Christmas at the Movies,” excerpts from “The Nutcracker” and “White Christmas.” Following the band’s performance, a raffle drawing will be held to determine the winner of a new 2012 Toyota Corolla.
The ACHS chorus will also perform immediately afterward at 3:30 p.m. in the ACHS mini-theater, entertaining music-lovers with “Carol of the Bells,” “Gaudeamus,” “Hodie” (Let us Rejoice Today), “Let It Snow/Winter Wonderland” and “Can You Hear.”


The following evening at 6:30 p.m. at AMS, the AMS band and chorus will both perform. The band from each grade level will perform songs. Sixth-grade students will perform “Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” “Jingle Bells” and “First Christmas March.” Seventh-grade students will play “Rockin’ Drummer Boy” and “Christmas in the Kennel.” The eighth-grade band will play Pachabel’s “Christmas,” “Hanukkah is Here” and “I Heard Drums on Christmas Day.” AMS chorus will also contribute the following songs: “Shine on Me,” “Sing Noel,” “Once Upon a Christmas Medley,” “All on a Silent Night” and a “Phantom of the Opera” medley.


Wrapping up the Christmas concert series will be CMS band at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at CMS. Each grade level will perform the songs they have prepared separately. Eighth-graders will play Fanfare Prelude to “Joy to the World,” Pachabel’s “Christmas” and “North Star Overture.” Seventh-grade students will follow with “The Tempest and Concerto for Sleigh Bells and Band.” Finally, the sixth-grade band will bring home the holidays with “Up on the Housetop,” “A Christmas Sleigh Ride” and “First Christmas March.”
