In a follow up to my article last week on the history of Beech Mountain Elementary School, I had a chance to talk to one of my dearest friends, Sharon Johnson.
Johnson got her teaching degree at Appalachian State University, and started her teaching career in 1964 in Lenoir. She taught at Elk Park Elementary School for a few years, and then became the kindergarten, first- and second-grade teacher at Beech Mountain from 1968, until the school’s closing in 2010. Her dad, Newland, served as principal at Beech Mountain for many years. Sharon retired from teaching in 2010, after serving an amazing 46 years in the field of education. In fact, many of the students she taught would also serve as teachers at BMS as well.
