Business Spotlight: Buttermilk Restaurant

Matthew Hundley / (matthew.hundley@averyjournal.com)

Buttermilk Restaurant has risen from the ruins of Spear Grill to give Spear back the focus of its community.
For years, the Spear community focused around a store and restaurant owned and operated since the 1970s by the Staffords. After three generations of Stafford owners, however, the Staffords found it necessary to lease the restaurant to several different operators over the course of several years. On July 28, 2010, the Buchanan family stepped in to purchase Spear Superette and Spear Grill. While the Buchanans immediately continued operations of Spear Superette, the family decided that Spear Grill, in its state after several leases and different operators, was no longer the establishment that the Spear community deserved. Over the course of the next two and half years, Donnie, Doris, Derek, Erin and Dalton Buchanan, and Deirdre Carver, along with other members of the Buchanan family and neighbors and friends in Spear, worked weekends and off days to rebuild and expand Spear Grill, transforming it into a new location for food, community and commerce, Buttermilk Restaurant, which finally reopened in November 2012.
Buttermilk Restaurant is located at 5810 Highway 19E, and can be reached by telephone at (828) 765-2200. Buttermilk Restaurant also has its own Facebook page, where Doris keeps fans up to date on daily specials, which change week to week.
