Firemen’s Health Fair

All Avery County firemen and their families are invited to visit Newland Fire Department for the opportunity to receive a variety of medical tests for free or at low cost from 7 to 11 a.m. this Saturday, April 6.
Mayland Community College’s Nurse’s and Medical Assisting associations, along with staff from Appalachian Regional Healthcare System will be on hand to administer a variety of tests, either for free or at very reduced costs.
Free services include blood pressure tests, weight and height measurements, BMI, vision screenings, hearing screenings, blood sugar screenings, pulmonary screening and information on chronic diseases and cancer.
Other tests are offered at reduced costs, including a comprehensive metabolic panel for $20, complete blood count for $15, lipid panel to check cholesterol for $15, prostate specific antigen for $15 and A1c for people with diabetes for $10.
The fair will also offer a package deal, providing the CMP, CBC and lipid panel tests for $45.
