Wall-to-wall art

Over the course of several years, the students in Mickey Banner
and Calah Fortune’s art classes at Avery County High School have transformed the hallways of their
school into expansive works of art. At ACHS, the walls are not only covered with students’ art, they
are the art. Since he came to ACHS, Banner has been encouraging and guiding students through the
creation of murals, beginning near his art room and expanding outward until the school itself became
a gallery.
Banner and Fortune are now inviting anyone to visit ACHS for a tour of the extensive artwork adorning the walls of the school. Anyone interested in viewing the murals firsthand can visit ACHS, stop by the front office and ask to speak with Banner.
For a preview of just some of the artwork on display in and around ACHS, The Avery Journal-Times is providing a sneak peak at some highlights from around the building.
