A blanketing, a dusting and everything in between

The morning of Friday, Jan. 18, revealed different scenes
across Avery County following the snowy downpour on the night of Thursday, Jan. 17. The variation
in terrain and altitude across Avery County means that residents experience a wide variety of
effects from winter weather, especially when that weather follows a period of warm temperatures.
To illustrate the difference between different sections of Avery County, the two pictures below both depict the aftermath of the previous night’s winter weather in Avery County early on the morning of Friday, Jan. 18. The first photograph comes from the high elevations of the Old Beech Mountain Community, while the other picture was taken in the aptly named community of Green Valley, which saw little accumulation.
