Avery County K-9s blessed by gift from local church

One faithful K-9 officer will be safer on the job thanks to a charitable donation from a local church.

The Avery County Sheriff’s Office received a $750 donation from the Holy Cross Church of Valle Crucis to be used in purchasing a canine bulletproof vest. The donation coincided with the annual Blessing of the Animals service in celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The Blessing of the Animals is a centuries-old practice that originated with St. Francis.
