Avery County Schools Child Nutrition scores 102
Avery County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects Avery County Schools’ cafeterias on a regular basis. Health inspection scores are based on many things such as cleanliness, proper food temperatures, equipment and maintenance of the building. ACS Child Nutrition facilities maintain an average health inspection grade of 101.5. Health inspection codes are posted for public viewing in each school cafeteria as well as on the Child Nutrition Department section on the Avery County Schools’ website, http://www.averyschools.net. All Child Nutrition managers are ServSafe certified, which is a nationally recognized and accredited food safety program sponsored by National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. After recent inspections at each school, three schools received a perfect score of 102. This type of high rating does not happen without commitment, diligent work and dedication. Tammy Woodie, Child Nutrition director, stated that this team of professionals as well as all those who work in Child Nutrition, take their job seriously providing the best services for the students and staff possible. David Burleson, ACS superintendent, stated that he had been in education for more than 25 years and had never been a part of a system that was able to score that high. Congratulations to Banner Elk Elementary School, manager Joann Gipson and staff, Michelle Shomaker; Crossnore Elementary School, manager Joanne Garland and staff, Tracy Gragg; and Jane Shepherd; and Riverside Elementary School manager Barbara Arnett and staff, Mary Clark.
