Banner Elk Town Council makes zoning decisions

Following a pair of public hearings at its Monday, Oct. 14, meeting, Banner Elk Town Council passed a rezoning request for a parcel of property (0.10 acres) between Banner Elk Fire Department and the turn-in road to the old elementary school. Council also passed a motion to amend text in the zoning ordinance to reflect recent changes adopted by N.C. General Assembly as it attempts to standardize how boards of adjustment across the state conduct business. Text amendments include the requirement of a simple majority for motions to carry, rather than a previous four-fifths required vote, as well as text simplifying the variance process.
