Banner Elk man charged with possession of stolen property

Boone Police have charged Nicholas Lee Mattingly, age 55, of Banner Elk, with one count of felony possession of stolen property, as well as being a fugitive from justice, a BPD news release said. Police said Mattingly is suspected to have stolen a Jeep Cherokee in Indiana, before making his way to Boone. Mattingly was also wanted in Indiana for felony possession of methamphetamine and the infraction offenses of driving while suspended and expired plates. Mattingly had agreed to come to the Boone Police Department to discuss other police matters when he was observed driving the stolen Jeep. Mattingly was arrested and taken before a Watauga County magistrate, where he was told to appear on Feb. 26 and held under a $65,000-secured bond.
