Candidate filing: The first step in the race
The time has come for Avery County leaders to step up to the starting line for this year’s race. Filing for this year’s primary election opens at noon on Monday, Feb. 13, and will remain open until noon on Wednesday, Feb. 29.
In Avery County, seven positions are open for candidates: Three county commissioner seats, three board of education seats and the position of Register of Deeds.
Following the filing, the primary election will take place on Tuesday, May 8.
In addition to the county seats, during the primary, voters will also vote on the state’s newest governor and an amendment to the North Carolina Constitution defining marriage as existing only between a man and a woman, even though same-sex marriages are already not recognized legally in N.C.
As of presstime, candidates for other state offices are not known because it is still uncertain into which legislative district Avery County will fall. The determination has been delayed due to legal challenges to newly drawn district maps, which many Democrats and minority voting rights groups say limit the voting power of minorities.
