Driver killed after vehicle runs off road, authorities say

One motorist is dead following an 8 a.m. accident on Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Banner Elk, after a vehicle ran off the road and into a waterway near the historic Mill Pond, according to Banner Elk Police Department.
The victim was transported to Cannon Memorial Hospital, but was pronounced dead after arriving. As of presstime, authorities are not releasing the name of the victim or details of the crash, although inclement weather in the early morning hours is suspected to have been a factor, according to Banner Elk Police Department.
