Fire destroys home near Elk Park

A structure fire at Bear Paw Drive in Cranberry Creek Estates on Blevins Creek Road near Elk Park destroyed the home of Patrick and Lorinda Schneider on Tuesday, June 12, officials said.

Avery County Fire Marshal David Charles Vance said the fire began at about 1:29 p.m. at the 1,800 square-foot home.

Lorinda Schneider said she noticed smoke coming out of her home while doing yard work, prompting her to contact emergency personnel.

Elk Park Fire Department was first on the scene, but initially could not reach the residence due to a coded gate at the entrance to the community.

Firefighters used a truck to force its way through the gate to reach the residence and battle the blaze. Elk Park fire personnel sought additional support from additional departments countywide, including Newland, Linville, Frank, Green Valley, Crossnore and Banner Elk fire departments that fought the fire for several hours.

“The heat and humidity was a bit higher that day and it taxed the firefighters quite a bit,” Vance said.

Vance indicated there was no evidence of anything suspicious regarding the origin of the fire, but an investigation of the incident is ongoing.

“We’re not looking at anything really out of the ordinary, but we are still investigating,” Vance said. “Insurance investigators have been on the scene finishing up their work, but there is no appearance of anything suspicious in nature.”
