Flooding follows downpour

Rainstorms made the evening commute difficult or even dangerous
on the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 30, for many motorists, as floodwaters cut off or washed out
roads. In many places, the waters breached homes. The extent of the damage is yet to be
determined, as the situation became complicated late in the evening when plummeting temperatures
froze accumulated water and changed the rain to snow and sleet.
The icy conditions caused by the combination of rain and snow storms caused Avery County Schools to close on Thursday, Jan. 31, along with other area schools, including Mitchell, Yancey and Watauga.
The included pictures show the state of flooding between 5 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
