Independence Day in Avery County

With the approaching summer season comes perhaps the most prominent way to start it off, Independence Day on the Fourth of July. Throughout the county, cities and towns are finding ways to celebrate this important day that is rooted deeply in American society.


Beech Mountain Roasting of the Hog June 30
Beech Mountain Resort will be hosting the 47th annual Roasting of the Hog. Food will begin serving at 6 p.m. on June 30. The event features smoked pork and turkey barbecue, music by the Smokey Breeze Band, face painting, entertainment for children, rides, fireworks and more. Guests will have the option to dine indoors or outdoors. Fireworks will begin at dark. Ticket prices are $15 and $7.50 for adults and children, respectively, in advance, and at the door prices are $20 and $10 for adults and children, respectively. Banner Elk Party in the Park July 4

The Town of Banner Elk will be hosting its 4th annual Party in the Park. Preceding the events, there will be a parade that begins at Lees-McRae at 11 a.m. and ends between 11:45 a.m and noon at Tate – Evans Park. At Party in the Park guests will be treated to food, games, music, as well as a book sale and a duck race. There is no entry fee. Tickets for the duck race may be purchased at Banner Elk Town Hall for $5 per ticket or $20 for five. Those wishing to participate in the parade may call town hall at (828) 898-5398.


Elk Park Independence Day Parade July 4

Elk Park will be hosting an Independence Day Parade as well. The parade will begin at H&H Trucking at 11 a.m. and end at Jack Hicks Trucking. Those wishing to participate in the parade may contact town hall at (828) 733-9573. The town is not accepting participants who would be walking or using only a wagon.


Crossnore Independence Day Celebration July 4

The Town of Crossnore will be hosting a multitude of events to celebrate Independence Day. At 4 p.m. on July 4, the parade will begin at Clark Road. After the parade, there will be an honoring of veterans with two posthumous mentions. Afterwards, at 5 p.m. several festivities will be available to the public. Music, featuring jazz, bluegrass and country artists, will be played. There will be food vendors selling items such as hamburgers, hot dogs and barbeque. In addition, there will be three bounce houses for children set up as well as a frog-jumping event. There will also be a raffle for prizes such as guns and Wal-Mart gift certificates. Finally, when it becomes adequately dark the fireworks show will take place. For information regarding volunteer work to assist cleanup or food, contact Crossnore Fire Department at (828) 733-4304. The vendor permit has been extended to June 22 with vendor permits available at Crossnore Town Hall between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
