NCDOT awards $3.6 million for resurfacing projects in Avery
N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti recently awarded a $3.6 million contract to Maymead Inc. of Mountain City, Tenn. to resurface approximately 11.8 miles of road in Avery County. Specifically, Maymead will be resurfacing five different stretches of road around the county between April 30 and Sept. 30.
The resurfacing effort will include the following five sections of Avery County roads:
• In Banner Elk, 4.5 miles of Hickory Nut Gap Road in from Meadow View Drive to Highway 194 in Newland.
• In Newland, 3.5 miles of Highway 181 in Montezuma from Highway 221 to Highway 194.
• In Newland, 2.3 miles of Spanish Oak Road from Highway 194 to Cow Camp Road.
• In Crossnore, 1.2 miles of Highway 221 from the Forestry Service to the new pavement south of the intersection of Highway 221 and Mount Pleasant Road.
• In Linville, 0.3 miles of Highway 221 from the bridge over the Linville River to Highway 181.Resurfacing these sections of roadway will extend the lifespan of the pavement, improve safety and provide a smoother ride for motorists, according to NCDOT.
This is one of 30 contracts totaling $82.6 million awarded by Conti for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 8 percent, or about $7.2 million, below NCDOT estimates.
According to Federal Highway Administration, every $1 million spent on transportation creates 30 jobs, and according to the construction industry, every dollar invested in transportation generates $6 in economic impact. Since January 2009, NCDOT has awarded 471 highway contracts totaling $3.6 billion.
