Newland Christmas extravaganza December 8

Matthew Hundley / (matthew.hundley@averyjournal.com)

All of Avery County is invited to Newland’s Christmas Parade and Celebration, organized by Newland Business Association, which will kick off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, with a parade, followed by caroling, refreshments, decorating and a tree-lighting ceremony on Newland Town Square.

Lineup for the parade will begin promptly at 4 p.m. Any businesses, individuals or organizations interested in being part of the parade should contact Veronica Brocco by email at (veryapft@yahoo.com) Brocco extended a special invitation to any veterans or military families interested in preparing a “home for the holidays” themed float to support the troops.

The parade lineup will take place in the parking lot of Lowe’s Foods, proceed down Highway 194 through town and circle Newland Town Square before coming to a stop to join the celebrations on the square.

Carolers from several area churches will add their voices to the festivities. Any caroling groups that would like to join in are welcome to come and lend their voices as well. Local schools will decorate the square’s trees, which the gathered crowds will judge to award prizes for decorating. A live nativity will also take place on the square while the evening culminates with a tree-lighting ceremony.

Throughout the event, refreshments such as hot chocolate, cider and hot dogs will be on hand at the square.

NBA President Johnny Carson encouraged anyone to participate in the parade, provided they stick to the Christmas theme.

“Ride a horse if you want to, but deck it out in jingle bells,” said Carson. “It promises to be a really awesome evening.”

Anyone interested in participating in or contributing to any aspect of the planned Christmas celebration should contact VBrocco by email at (verapft@yahoo.com)
