Shedding light

Matthew Hundley / (matthew.hundley@averyjournal.com)

A series of new lights will illuminate the newly installed sidewalk running along Linville Street in Newland. The function of the lights and sidewalk is to provide a safe pedestrian path for residents of Linville Cove Senior Apartments, an apartment building currently being constructed in Newland to provide low-cost housing for seniors in Avery County. The lights and sidewalk will give future residents safe, easy access to Newland’s town center, Aver Senior Center and other amenities. Like the apartment building itself, the improvements to the streetscape in Newland were paid for with a grant through Appalachian Regional Commission, according to County Manager Robert Wiseman. The lights, sidewalks and apartments are being constructed at no cost to the town or county.
