Sheriff’s report: Gnarnia nets 150 arrests, 300 charges

On Aug. 9 to 11, The Festival of Gnarnia occurred on Beech Mountain. Approximately 4,500 people attended the concert. The following law enforcement agencies assisted with the event: Alcohol Enforcement (ALE), Avery County Sheriff’s Office, Avery County Municipal Drug Task Force, Banner Elk Police Department, Beech Mountain Police Department, N.C. Highway Patrol, Boone Police Department and Watauga County Sheriff’s Office. These agencies made roughly 300 charges during the event, and there were roughly 150 arrests, the majority of which were felonies. According to Avery Sheriff Kevin Frye, huge quantities of illegal drugs were seized in the process, including cocaine, heroin, ketamine, DMT, MDMA (ecstasy), marijuana, hundreds of dosage units of LSD, bath salts, several pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, four large containers of nitrous oxide (laughing gas), hashish and numerous illegal prescription drugs such as Valium, Xanax, Suboxone, Adderall, Ritalin, Clonazepam.
