Matthew Hundley / (matthew.hundley@averyjournal.com)

According to a report from N.C. Highway Patrol, a single-vehicle accident last Friday was the result of drugs or alcohol. Around 5:09 p.m. last Friday, Jan. 6, Justina Kirk Barnett ran her 1998 Subaru off the road, striking an embankment on Highway 105. Barnett’s injuries did not appear to be severe, as she refused treatment from Avery County EMS responders who arrived on the scene. According to the NCHP report, Barnett displayed impairment due to medication, drugs or alcohol. Trooper Allen Greer charged Barnett with driving while impaired and failure to maintain lane control.
