Stolen truck leads to Newland resident

ACSO deputies and investigators arrested Travis Wayne Carpenter, 25, of Newland for the theft of a motor vehicle, in addition to multiple other charges, on Sunday, Oct. 21.
According to investigators, Carpenter allegedly stole a one-ton pickup truck and a lowboy trailer from a home in Newland on Saturday, Oct. 20, and took the vehicle on a rampage at the home of family members in Banner Elk.

While only cosmetic damage was done to the stolen truck and trailer, additional vehicles were also damaged during the crime spree, according to investigators.

Both the truck and the trailer were later located by deputies in and around the Wilderness Trail subdivision, located off Smokey Straight.

Carpenter was located and arrested by deputies and taken before magistrate Bruce Lacey, where he was placed under a $12,000 secured bond.

While Carpenter reportedly denies all of the accusations against him, Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye said he remains in custody at Avery County Detention Facility with a court date of Dec. 25.
