Two-vehicle wreck in Montezuma

Caroline Harris / (caroline.harris@averyjournal.com)

A two-vehicle wreck at the intersection of Newland Highway and Old Highway 181 in Montezuma sent four to the hospital and caused traffic to slow-down in both directions on Tuesday, Dec. 3. N.C. Highway Patrol directed traffic around the wreck.

Ronald Buchanan of Newland and Trevor Shields of Newland collided when Shields attempted to make a left-hand turn and Buchanan went left of center in an attempt to pass. Buchanan’s 2001 Chevrolet compact vehicle collided with Shields’ 1997 Dodge truck, overturned and came to rest on the left side of Newland Highway. Buchanan and three passengers were transported to Cannon Memorial Hospital by Avery EMS. Shields and one passenger did not require emergency medical assistance. Both vehicles were towed on flatbed trucks from the scene.
