Alfred A. Houston
Houston was born in Avery County to the late Robert and Myrtle Cooper Houston.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Wood; two brothers, Woodrow Houston and Roy Houston; and one son, Tim Houston.
Houston was a social worker for Avery County. He loved to work on cars, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his sister, Dixie Carpenter and her husband, Tommy, of Crossnore; and one sister-in-law, Kathleen Williams and her husband, Charles, of Roan Mountain, Tenn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The graveside service for Houston will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, in the Woods Cemetery, with the Rev. Jeff Brewer and the Rev. John McCoury, officiating.
The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service on Friday. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
