Basil Brown

Basil Brown, 80, of Elk Park, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at the Charles A. Cannon Jr. Memorial Hospital.

A native of Elk Park, he was a son of the late Nath and Edith Hicks Brown. He was an Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict. Brown and his wife were the oldest members of Open Door Baptist Church. He was shrubberyman and retired as a school bus driver.

Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, Betty Cornett Brown; daughter, Deborah Taylor and husband, Kim, of Newland; son, Jerry Brown and wife, Denise, of Roan Mountain, and Michael Brown and wife, Amy, of Mountain City, Tenn.; siblings, Wanda Clark of Elk Park, Dallas Brown of Elk Park, and Bert Holtsclaw and wife, Alma, of Summerville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive.

A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, in the Hughes Cemetery on Baxter Hughes Road. The Rev. Reed Callahan officiated. Friends may call at the home at other times.
