George W. Wright
George W. Wright, 95, of Newland,
passed away on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at his residence.
A native of Avery County, he was born
Aug. 30, 1917, a son of the late William and Julia Johnson Wright.
He was a member of the United
States Army where he served in WWII. He was a Private First Class and received the American
Theater Service Medal, Eame Service Medal with the bronze star, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory
Medal Distinguished Unit Badge.
Wright was a member of Johnson Chapel Church, and enjoyed
talking and going to McDonalds.
Along with his parents, Wright was preceded in death by his,
son, Scotty Wright; wife, Hazel Wright; brothers, James Shoupe Sr., Grover Shoupe, Woodrow Wright;
sister, Pearl Johnson.
A friend to everyone, Wright has left to cherish his memory his sister,
Myrtle Miller of Charlotte; two nieces, six nephews, numerous great nieces and great
nephews.
Funeral services for Wright were conducted 2 p.m. Thursday Jan. 17, 2013, in the
Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Reed Callahan officiating.
Interment followed in the Hughes Cemetery. The family received friends from 12 p.m. until the
service hour.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mayland Community College for the
Scotty Wright Scholarship Fund.
