He loved, and was greatly loved by, his four children, Hersey C. "Mac" Forehand III of Boone, Penelope F. Diegelmann of Richmond, Va., Stephen D. Forehand of Alexandria, Va, and William S. Forehand of Gaithersburg, Md. He was very special to his 10 grandchildren, including Hersey C. "Eric" Forehand IV of Durham, and Kathleen F. Hall of Ester, Alaska, both formerly of the High Country; five great-grandchildren, include James Thomas "Hoss" Hall of Ester, Alaska.

He graduated from the USCG Academy in 1942 and served in the North Atlantic during WWII. He is further survived by uncounted mariners saved during a 22-year U.S. Coast Guard career that included command of two search and rescue cutters and service on several others.

A wonderful father, grandfather and gentleman, he will be remembered.
