James Ernest Lafferty

James Ernest Lafferty, 68, of Old Turnpike East, Banner Elk, passed away Thursday evening, Jan. 16, 2014, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

Lafferty was born Nov. 9, 1945, in Avery County, a son of the late Ernest Linwood Lafferty and Nancy Norris Lafferty. He was diesel mechanic and equipment operator for Eggers Construction in Banner Elk.

Lafferty is survived by two daughters, Gina Jones and husband, Dwayne, of China Grove, and Lisa Crouch and husband, Gary, of Hamptonville; one granddaughter, Whitney Jones of China Grove; three grandsons, Michael Lafferty and Kevin Lafferty, both of Winston-Salem, and Landon Jones of China Grove; one brother, William Lafferty of Banner Elk; and one sister, Louise Lafferty Leasure and husband, Buddy, of Greensboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jimmy Lafferty Jr., and one brother, John Elbert Lafferty.

Funeral services for James Ernest Lafferty were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body lay in state at the chapel from 1 to 2 p.m. The Rev. Gordon Noble officiated. Burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery.

The family received friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, prior to the service.
