Kenneth Guy Johnson Sr.

Kenneth Guy “Johnny” Johnson Sr., 72, of South Mountain Institute Road, Nebo, died Monday, April 1, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital, Lenoir.

Born Dec. 6, 1940, in Avery County, he was a son of the late Shoner and Hope Meredith Johnson. He was a devoted Christian who loved reading the Bible and attending Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member. Johnson was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed making crafts, of which woodworking was his favorite.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Abraham Johnson.

A devoted and loving husband, son, father, grandfather, and brother, Johnson is survived by his wife of 49 years, Laura Dellinger Johnson; a son, Kenneth Guy Johnson Jr. of Nebo; grandchildren, Kaelee Cheyennee Johnson and Shoner Kade Johnson; brothers, Shoner Kyle Johnson Jr. and wife, Mary, of Morganton, David Russell Johnson of Newland, and Daniel Paul Johnson of Nebo; sisters, Mona Clark, Becky Hoilman and husband, Herman, Martha Aldridge and husband, Mike, all of Newland, and Amanda Keck and husband, David of Denver.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Gyles Widener and the Rev. Josh Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
