Lester Hughes, 89, of 582 Jerry's Creek Rd., Newland, passed away on Monday, Jan. 7, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born in Avery County on April
22, 1924, a son of the late Hobert and Zona Hughes.
Hughes was a United States Marine Corp Veteran, having served at Iwo Jima during World War II. He was an active member of Roaring Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Wallace, Jason, Sonny, and Spence Hughes; a sister, Vicky Young.
Survivors include his loving wife, Evelyn Hughes; son, Cole W. Hughes of the home; daughters, Christina Buchanan, and her husband, David, of Roaring Creek, and Kimberly Isner, and her husband, David, of Hinton, W.Va.; grandchildren, Damien Buchanan of Roaring Creek, Shane Boone of Hinton, Katie Isner of Hinton, Aaron Isner of Hinton; great-granddaughter, Kaylee Davis of Hinton; sisters, Jean Oaks of Hanging Rock, Alice Hughes of Roaring Creek, Mildred Stafford of Plumtree, Kathy Hoilman of Roaring Creek.
Funeral services for Hughes were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the the Rev. Troy Smith and the Rev. Brent Price officiating. Interment followed in the Hughes Cemetery.
The family received friends from 12 p.m. until the service hour Friday at the funeral home.
