Ronald and Nancy Buchanan

Ronald William Buchanan and his wife, Nancy Barlow Buchanan, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013.

Ronald was born on Nov. 19, 1944, in Avery County to the late Claude Buchanan and the late Thelma “Granny Bill” Winkler Buchanan Townsend. He was retired from US Textiles and enjoyed mechanics and fishing.

Nancy was born July 2, 1948, in Avery County to the late Ira Frank Barlow and the late Emma Sparks Barlow. She was retired from Baxter and was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Barlow. She enjoyed cooking, taking pictures and spending time with her family.

Ronald and Nancy were both past members of the Tabernacle for Jesus, and recently were attending the Avery County Revival Center.

They both leave behind their children, Claude Buchanan, and his wife, Ruth, of Newland, Thomas Buchanan, and his wife, Cindy, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., Timothy Buchanan, and his wife, Kim, of Newland; grandchildren, Beth Buchanan, Tyler Shell, Justin Buchanan, Brook Buchanan, and Cody Buchanan.

Ronald also leaves behind his sisters, Dorothy Townsend of Valdese, Judy Oyer of Melbourne, Fla., Charlotte Richardson of Bryan, Texas, Michelle Lempke of Bryan, Christine Slingerland of Elizabethton, Tenn., Grace Shook of Elk Park; brothers, Jack Buchanan of Salisbury, Johnny Buchanan of Elk Park, and Jakie Ruchardson of Houston, Texas.

Nancy also leaves a sister, Shirley Burleson of Roan Mountain.

Joint funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan were held at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Beers and Pastor Steve Turbyfill officiating. The family received friends Thursday evening from 5 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home.

Private interment services will be held on Friday.
