Shirley Lewis Arbogast

Shirley Marie Lewis Arbogast, 87, passed away at her residence on Sunday, April 14, 2013.

A native of Iron Mountain, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Mabel Johnson Lewis.

Arbogast was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Johnson City, Tenn., and a member of the Eastern Star in Florida. She attended Plattsburg Teachers College in New York and taught elementary education for over ten years in Long Island, N.Y., Green Acres, Fla., and Lake Worth, Fla.

While in college, she played the cello in the orchestra along with multiple other instruments, she was also a talented painter. Arbogast met her husband of 61 years, Mr. Rueben Arbogast, they married in 1951. They spent 35 years of their married life in South Florida then lived in Newland for 16 years, and moved to the Tri-Cities area in 2003.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Arbogast was preceded in death by her brother, Douglas Lewis.

In addition to her husband, those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Sherry Arbogast Fitch, Florida, and Anne Arbogast Nolan and husband Timothy, Jonesborough, Tenn.; one son, Stanley L. Arbogast and wife, Debbie, of Florida; seven grandchildren, Jill Fitch Scarr, Randy Fitch, Michael Arbogast, Jennifer Arbogast, all of Florida, Amy Morton Schmidt and husband, Ryan, of Colorado, Christina Morton, Colorado, and Susanne Morton Hernberg and husband, Daniel, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Emma Hernberg, Jonathan Hernberg and Matthew Schmidt.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th fl., New York, NY 10001, or to The American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231.

A memorial service will be held for Arbogast at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2013, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2343 Knob Creek Rd., Johnson City, TN 37604.
