Verna Oakes Phillips

Verna Oakes Phillips, 96, of Newland, passed away on Dec. 7, 2013, at her residence.
A native of Avery County, she was born April 19, 1917, a daughter of the late Granvel Oakes and Effie Phillips Oakes Gilliand.
She attended Emmanuel Baptist Church and worked for Glen Raven Mills as a seamstress.
Phillips enjoyed flowers and sewing.
Along with her parents, Phillips was preceded in death by her husband, Abe Phillips; sisters, Elta Hicks, Nellie Baldwin, and Stella Aldridge.
Remembered as the sweetest lady in the world, who always had a smile on her face, and was faithful to her family, Phillips has left to cherish her memory her daughter, Barbara Goins and husband, Garland, of Morganton; grandson, Roger Kincaid and wife, Debbie, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; niece, Louise Trice and husband, Charles, of Newland; great-niece, Kathie Massee and husband, David, of Linville; great-great nephew, Justin Massee of Johnson City, Tenn.; special friend and caregiver, Jenny Hughes; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family received friend from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Interment services followed at 2 p.m. in the White Pine Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Ingham officiating.
