Wayne Allen Carpenter

Wayne Allen Carpenter, 71, of Knightdale, passed away peacefully at Duke Raleigh Hospital on Feb. 16, 2013.

Carpenter was born on Feb. 1, 1942, in Avery County to the late Elmer Luther Carpenter and Pearl Carpenter Taylor. He was a graduate of Berea College prior to serving his country in the U.S. Army. Carpenter retired after many years in the information technology industry.

The family will have a private inurnment service on a later date at the family farm in Avery County.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Pieper Carpenter; children, Craig Carpenter of Findlay, Ohio, and Sondra Gips Phillips (Spencer) of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Curtis and Skyler Carpenter, Marissa Gonzales, Ashleigh Wagoner (Scott) and Crea Phillips; great-grandchildren, Isabella Carpenter and Avaleigh Wagoner; brothers, Lee Carpenter, Winston Salem, Ralph Carpenter, Villa Hills, Ky., and Emerson Carpenter, Tempe, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carolinas Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation either online, http://www.acf.org, or by mail, 160 Zillicoa St. Suite D, Asheville, NC 28801. This organization is developing a restoration variety of the American Chestnut tree, which was virtually eliminated in the Appalachian region by blight decades ago; or you may consider planting or having a tree planted in Wayne’s memory and sharing your planting story with the family.
