The Avery men's soccer team held an early lead against Mountain Heritage on Monday, Sept. 24, at MacDonald Stadium, only to see the scrappy Cougars claw back into the match, netting a pair of goals to knot the Western Highlands Conference match at two goals apiece. Two 10-minute overtime sessions resulted in no scoring, as the clubs were forced to settle for the 2-2 tie.
Matt Balog put the Vikings on the board in the first 19 seconds of play off an Isauro Estrada assist to give AHS the 1-0 lead. Twenty-three minutes later, Balog found the back of the net for a second goal, staking Avery to a two-goal differential.
Heritage answered only six minutes later, when Gerardo Magana scored to cut the AHS lead to 2-1, while in the 34th minute, the Cougars again found a loose ball near the penalty area and converted to tie the match at 2-2.
On Wednesday, Sept. 26, the Vikings earned an impressive 5-0 victory against rival Mitchell at Memorial Stadium in Ledger. The Big Red extended its unbeaten streak to four matches, all in Western Highlands Conference action.
AHS takes on Owen in Swannanoa this Wednesday, Oct. 3, and ventures out of conference, traveling to take on Providence Academy (Tenn.) this Friday, Oct. 5.
