App State softball opened its 2014 season on Thursday, Feb. 6, with a pair of games to start the Kajikawa Classic. The Mountaineers played San Diego State in the first game of the evening and fell to the Aztecs by a score of 7-6.

After a scoreless first inning, the Mountaineers got on the board in the top of the second inning. Sarah Warnock drove in the first run of the season for the Mountaineers through the left side to drive in Cara Parker and make the score 1-0 in favor of App State.

The Aztecs tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single to centerfield off the bat of Sydnee Cable to drive in Stefanie Polonia. In the top of the fourth, the Mountaineers put together its highest scoring inning. After a Pepper Butler single and bunt single from Dani Heichen, Ashley Seering hit a bomb to left-center field two batters later to give the Mountaineers a 4-1 advantage heading into the bottom half of the fourth.

San Diego State picked up one run in the bottom of the fourth off of a Cable double to drive in Jacki Campa and narrow the score to 4-2. Neither team scored again until the sixth inning. In the top half of the inning, Butler and Heichen found themselves on second and third. Lindsay Loudermilk and Seering rapped back-to-back singles to extend the Mountaineers' lead to 6-2. The Aztecs tacked on a run as Monica Downey singled up the middle to drive in Kayla Bufardeci to close the App lead to 6-3.
