Avery, Cloudland look strong in dress rehearsal

Avery and Cloudland's football teams took advantage of a dress rehearsal of sorts on Friday, Aug. 16, at Orr Field, and took the chance to shine. Tre Jackson threw for two touchdowns to lead the Vikings to a 13-0 victory in two quarters of action over Unaka, while Cloudland saw Austin Whitehead score to lift the Highlanders past Hampton 6-0 in the Carter County Jamboree.

In the second half of the night, the Vikings set the tone early. After stopping Unaka just past midfield, Avery covered 67 yards on nine plays. The drive was capped when Jackson hit Stetson Stafford for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 4:33 left in the first quarter.

Unaka was forced to a three and out on the ensuing possession. The Vikings struck again when Jackson found Wade Smith for an 11-yard touchdown pass. On the drive, Jackson broke free for a 29-yard run to help set up the touchdown.

Heath Austin nabbed an interception on the second play of the next drive for the Vikings, but Avery fumbled the ball on the very next play. The Rangers offense marched inside the Avery 20-yard line, but Trevor Pickens stepped in front of a Unaka pass to intercept the ball at the end of the first quarter.
