Avery football opens 2013 season against 'Landers

Jamie Shell / (

Footballs will be teed up and the excitement of Friday night football returns as high school football begins in earnest this week.

The Avery Vikings, coming off a 3-9 season and blowout loss in the first round of last season's 1-AA state football playoffs, looks to erase those memories at the expense of the rival Cloudland (Tenn.) Highlanders. The teams will meet for the first time in three seasons, as both schools look to start 2013 with a win at the other's expense.

Avery defeated Cloudland in its last meeting by a 43-24 final score in Roan Mountain, Tenn., in 2010.
