Avery wrestling held its final home dual meet of the season with a home match against Polk County on Monday, Feb. 4. The Vikings earned a 45-25 victory against the Wolverines to capture a third-place finish in the Western Highlands Conference.

The Big Red competed at the conference tournament on Friday, Feb. 8, at Mitchell High School. Owen and host Mitchell came away with the top two team finishes, but the Vikings was represented well with a pair of runner-up finishers, two third-place efforts and five fourth-place finishes.

Earning bout victories in the dual meet with Polk County was Will Jordan (forfeit) at 106 pounds, Preston Childress (pinfall) at 126 pounds, Harley Rash (pinfall) at 132 pounds, Zac Freeman (pinfall) at 145 pounds, Josh Gragg (forfeit) at 152 pounds, Harley Foster (pinfall) at 160 pounds, Ryan Sheppard (overtime “sudden victory”) at 195 pounds and Scott Wiseman (forfeit) at 220 pounds.

The duo of Rash and Childress earned second-place finishes at last week’s WHC Tournament, with each wrestler coming up short in the finals to Mitchell opponents. Both Rash and Childress earned two victories in tournament competition before falling in the championship bout.

Sheppard and Wiseman each won three matches to earn third-place medals for their efforts. Sheppard earned a 3-1 decision against Mitchell’s Dillon Ledford to earn the third-place finish, while Wiseman defeated Madison’s Austin Ellingburg by pinfall to complete his day.

Avery grapplers Jordan, Brennan Clark (138 pounds), Freeman, Gragg and Blake Johnson (285 pounds) wrestled their way to fourth-place finishes. The group combined to win nine matches during the evening.

The Vikings returns to the mat for the 1A Western Regional tournament, held Saturday, Feb. 23, at Hendersonville High School.
