Granite Falls' Mike Darling and Chapel Hill's Jessica Bishop were the first male and female runners to cross the finish line on Saturday, June 9, at Antler Realty's A Cool 5 race at Beech Mountain.

Darling, 32, completed the grueling run in a time of 34:26, just seven seconds quicker than second-place male finisher, Lewis Hendricks of Chapel Hill.

Bishop, 37, completed the course in a time of 38:01, topping all female runners and charting an overall ninth-place finish among all racers. Twenty-five year old Jaime Shinn of Fort Collins, Colo. finished in second place among females with a time of 40:02.

Top five male and female finishers with completion times are as follows:
Male runners: Mike Darling: 34:26; Lewis Hendricks: 34:33; Jason Benoit: 34:50; Alan Utter: 35:01; Nathanial Burch: 35:13.

Female runners: Jessica Bishop: 38:01; Jaime Shinn: 40:02; Melissa Darling: 40:24; Nancy Frye: 42:07; Tammra Granger: 44:11.

This year’s race featured 116 runners, and was the marquee event in a weekend that included a pasta dinner, 1.5-mile fun run/walk and post-race cookout and awards party. A Cool 5 began in summer 2008 on Beech Mountain, benefiting Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation Department. The race weekend not only capitalizes on the beauty and splendor of Beech Mountain, but also unites outdoor enthusiasts for a great cause.

From 2008 to 2011, A Cool 5 successfully raised more than $85,000 via sponsors, event participation and in-kind donations, resulting in the construction of a new community playground, falls trail hiking loop at Buckeye Lake Recreation Area and will soon help to complete an ADA accessible community fishing docks program with the construction of a new dock at Lake Coffey.
