Avery High School girls basketball assistant coach Matt Wiseman was approved by the county's Board of Education and named new Lady Vikings varsity hoops head coach on Friday, Aug. 2. Wiseman replaces longtime head coach Missy Lyons, who resigned following last season.

Wiseman is no stranger to Avery athletics, serving as an assistant for Lyons at the varsity level the past two seasons. Prior to coaching at Avery, Wiseman served as an assistant coach under Watauga High School boys varsity basketball head coach Rob Sanders and also assisted with Watauga's junior varsity boys basketball program.

"I'm honored and humbled, really. Coach Lyons has really taught me a lot, and I am glad to be able to take over for her to try to continue her methods of coaching," Wiseman said. "Also having great coaches like Pat Daniels and Allison Phillips to help me has helped greatly. My goal is to keep a lot of the status quo and try to continue to instill what Coach Lyons has in place. I've always had a love for basketball, all the way back to my playing days."

Wiseman played varsity basketball for two years at Avery under head coach Kenny Ward, with his club advancing to the sectional finals in 1996. Following college, Wiseman served as a JV assistant at Watauga for one season, and was promoted to varsity assistant coach under WHS head coach Sanders, who he assisted for the greater part of a decade.
