Junior varsity girls hoops outlasts Heritage, trounces Mitchell

Avery’s JV girls basketball team continued its roll through the Western Highlands Conference schedule with a pair of wins against Mountain Heritage and Mitchell.

Avery met its toughest conference foe of the season thus far on Tuesday, Jan. 14, when it played host to Mountain Heritage. Avery built a 9-5 lead after one quarter and led 20-11 at halftime behind eight points by Abbe Miller and seven points from Elizabeth Pittman.

MHHS cut into the Lady Vikings’ lead as it held Avery to only three points in the third period. The Lady Cougars tallied nine points to cut Avery’s advantage to 23-20 entering the fourth quarter.

Early in the final stanza, Avery found its shooting touch and forced the Lady Cougars into a number of turnovers. The Big Red poured in 21 points in the fourth quarter to almost double its output from the first three stanzas en route to a 12-point win.
