Men's track tops region poll for third straight week
LMC men's track and field team sits atop the 2012 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association Indoor Track and Field Southeast Region Poll for the third straight week, announced USTFCCCA officials on Tuesday, Feb. 7.
LMC tops the region with a total of 368.14, followed by Mount Olive College (313.10), Mars Hill College (247.31), Limestone College (217.73) and Clayton State University (206.70). King College is sixth with a mark of 204.24, followed by Anderson University (152.41), Queens University of Charlotte (139.25) and Lenoir-Rhyne University (129.94).
The Bobcats performed well at Kent Taylor Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet, posting six top-10 finishes as a team. Sophomore Evan Webb recorded a personal-best of 4.61 meters in the pole vault, finishing sixth in the event as junior Kevin Dever placed seventh with a mark of 4.31 meters.
LMC returns to action this Friday, Feb. 17, when the Bobcats travel to Boone to take part in Appalachian State University's Pre-Conference Meet.
Women's basketball: Erskine surges past LMC
Erskine College women's basketball team placed five players in double figures en route to an 85-68 win over LMC on Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Conference Carolinas play.
Paige Whitaker paced the Bobcats with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including a 5-for-11 clip from downtown, as Chloe Parker chipped in 16 markers with a 6-for-6 night from the floor. Icey Patterson and DeAnna Waters each added 10 points, while Waters posted a team-high five rebounds.
Porsha Morgan led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while also posting a game-high seven assists. Elizabeth Tatum added a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, as Lindsey Weidenaar chipped in 15 points. Sha'Niqua Whitley and Tara Potter each recorded 11 points, as Jana Dixon posted 10 rebounds.
LMC jumped out to an early 8-3 lead on a Whitaker triple before the Fleet responded, launching a 13-7 run to claim a narrow 16-15 advantage on a three-pointer by Weidenaar. After Sophie Witte regained the one-point lead for the Bobcats, Erskine put together a 23-8 surge to open a 39-23 advantage on a Morgan triple with 4:17 to go in the half. LMC answered with a 12-4 run, closing out the half with a Waters jumper to cut the margin to 43-35 heading into intermission.
The Bobcats stayed within striking distance early in the second half, cutting the margin to six points on a trio of occasions before Erskine gained control with a 13-3 run, pushing the lead to 69-53 on a Morgan triple with 8:37 to play. Erskine held on from there, widening the margin to as many as 21 points en route to the 85-68 victory.

Erskine College men's basketball team outscored LMC by a 30-22 margin in the first half and held on for a 69-61 victory down the stretch in Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Belk Arena.
Brandon Quarles and Casey Sorrell both posted a game-high 18 points to pace the Fleet, as DeShaun Hall and Corey Sorrell added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Quarles and Hall added game-highs of nine boards and four assists for Erskine.
Daniel Sepokas and Jeremiah Henry led the way for Lees-McRae with 12 points each, as BJ Battle and Gideon Oji added nine and eight points, respectively. DeAndre Tillman and Sepokas chipped in game-highs of 10 rebounds and three steals, respectively.
Erskine opened the game strong, taking an early 9-4 lead on a three-pointer by Corey Sorrell before the Bobcats responded with a 6-0 run, claiming a 10-9 advantage on a jumper by Juan Urbina at the 12:04 mark. After Corey Sorrell knocked down a triple to give the Fleet an 18-12 lead, Battle and Asad Lamot connected on back-to-back shots from downtown to even the tally at 18-18 with 6:29 to play in the half.
Following a steal and a slam by Battle that gave the Bobcats a 20-18 lead, Quarles poured in 10 straight points to help Erskine open a 28-20 advantage with 2:16 left on the clock. Casey Sorrell knocked down a jumper to push the margin to 30-20 before Henry converted a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 30-22 heading into intermission.
The teams traded baskets for much of the second half, as Casey Sorrell knocked down back-to-back jumpers to give the Fleet a 40-29 lead with 17:06 to play. LMC trimmed the margin to seven on four occasions over the next six minutes, cutting the lead to 47-40 on a three-pointer by Corey Young at the 10:35 mark.

Erskine's strong free throw shooting sealed the win over the final 30 seconds, as the Fleet converted four clutch shots from the charity stripe to equal the final margin of 69-61.
