The Cloudland girls’ basketball team picked the right time to turn up the defensive pressure. With that pressure, it punched a ticket to the District 1-A Championship game.
The Lady ‘Landers used defense to stifle a solid South Greene team to take a 44-35 victory in the Saturday, Feb. 15, semifinals of the District 1-A Tournament at Daniel Boone High School. Cloudland advanced to the semifinals after dispatching University High 66-35 on Friday, Feb. 14.
Cloudland was slated to face top-seeded North Greene on Tuesday in the title match.
Against South Greene, the Lady Rebels used a late run to take a 10-8 lead after a quarter of play. Cloudland responded in the second quarter as Courtney Clarke and Kendall Mull helped push the Lady ‘Landers to a 22-16 advantage at the half.
In the third quarter, Cloudland maintained the advantage with key shots from Haley Johnson and Courtney Wilson. South Greene closed the gap to three points in the final stanza, but the Lady ‘Landers defense rose to the occasion to punch the ticket to Tuesday’s championship game.
