Lady Vikings defeats Rosman, will meet West Wilkes in second round of 1A state basketball playoffs

Megan Tennant scored 21 points to lead four Lady Vikings in
double-figures as Avery defeated Rosman 63-36 in the opening round of the NCHSAA 1A state basketball
playoffs.AHS struggled shooting the basketball and committed a high number of turnovers in the
opening quarter, as Rosman pulled out to a 17-6 lead with 7:00 remaining in the first
half.
AHS rallied with its defense, however, using a 13-2 scoring run through the remainder of the half to tie the Lady Tigers 19-19 at intermission.AHS distanced itself from the Lady Tigers in the third quarter, outscoring Rosman 20-2 to seize a 39-21 lead after three periods. Avery poured it on in the final eight minutes to pull away for the win.Lauren Burleson scored 14 points, with 10 points each from Kelsie Clarke and Breanna Heaton. Jolena Galloway and Candace Pettit scored eight points each.
Avery will meet West Wilkes in the second round of the state playoffs in Viking Gym at the special start time of 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22. Avery played West Wilkes twice during the regular season in non-conference contests, with AHS earning both victories in competitive contests. West defeated Highland Tech 49-42 to advance to Wednesday's showdown.
