Lady Vikings golf finishes fourth in 1A standings at state golf tournament

A trio of golfers represented Avery High School women’s golf at last week’s NCHSAA 1A/2A state golf championships at Foxfire Country Club near Pinehurst. Due to a strong two-day performance, AHS finished fourth at states, shooting a team score of 607.
AHS freshman Paige Church shot the low score at the championships for the Big Red, firing a 96+91=187 to finish ninth place overall out of 29 golfers in 1A competition and 22nd overall out of the entire 1A/2A field. Senior teammate Kristen Burleson finished 37th overall and 18th in 1A competition with a score of 99+101=200. Fellow senior Nikki Wright completed the two-round championships with a 116+104=220 to help the Lady Vikings finish ninth overall out of all 1A/2A teams playing the two-day event.
Hendersonville captured the 1A top team honors with a score of 550, while 2A Salisbury won the tournament’s overall team championship, as Hornets golfers carded two of the top three individual scores en route to a final team score of 490. Salisbury’s Isabella Rusher fired a 75+71=146 to win individual medalist honors.
