Lady Vikings golf prepares for conference tournament

AHS Lady Vikings golf team continues to tune up for the upcoming conference tournament with events across the region. Last week a tournament scheduled in Hendersonville was rained out and was rescheduled to take place earlier this week.
The event the team managed to complete took place at Polk County's home course of Meadowbrook Golf Club. Hendersonville came away with the team score victory with a total of 121, followed closely behind by Avery at 137. Polk finished third with a team score of 177.
Paige Church paced the Lady Vikings with a nine-hole score of 44. Senior teammate Kristen Burleson carded a 46, followed closely behind by Devyn Plyler with 47. Abby Roberts shot 54 for the Big Red, with teammates Alexis Usko and Nikki Wright posting scores of 58 and 59, respectively.
The Lady Vikings have six players qualified for regional competition, although only five members of a team are allowed to compete. Hendersonville is the only school to top Avery in team scores this season, as the squad boasts the individual state champion golfer from last season among its ranks.
"We're still trying to catch Hendersonville, but we are also distancing ourselves from the rest of the Western Highlands Conference schools," said head coach Boe Barinowski. "We expect to have multiple golfers competing at the state tournament and are working toward strong performances at the conference and regional tournaments coming up."
In addition to the Hendersonville match, an 18-hole practice round for the WHC tournament, the Lady Vikings competed at Grassy Creek Golf Course in Spruce Pine, where the second round of this season's conference tournament will be held. The tournament takes place on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15 and 16.
